San Jose Kendo Dojo was founded in 1962 and teaches the Japanese martial
art of kendo in the Bay Area. In 2012, the dojo celebrated its 50th anniversary
with guests and competitors from around the globe at its annual San Jose tournament.
For this special event I rebranded the dojo and designed a new logo as well as event
programs, tournament awards, and commemorative T-shirts. The 50th anniversary is the golden
anniversary and I reflected that in the gold color palette.
Every year the Japanese American Association of Northern California, the
oldest Japanese American community organization, recognizes select individuals
with induction into the Bunka Hall of Fame. The Bunka Hall of Fame
is an internationally renown award for individuals who “have excelled in, contributed
to, and spread Japanese culture as practiced in America.” As part of the class
of 2014, Charlie “Uichi” Tanaka, the head sensei of San Jose Kendo Dojo, recevied this high honor.
To commemorate Charlie “Uichi” Tanaka’s induction into the Bunka Hall of Fame, I created an image
to be hung on the walls of the Japanese American Association of Northern California
in collaboration with artist Atsuko Sugino.
